This page explains how content on Astro Baby Name is made and checked, so you can judge how far to rely on it.
AI-assisted drafting
We use an AI language model to help draft name meanings and descriptions. A draft is never published on its own authority: every meaning has to agree with at least one of the verification sources below, or the name is held back.
Where our facts come from
- Popularity: baby-name data from the US Social Security Administration (a US government work in the public domain) and from the Office for National Statistics for England and Wales, used under the Open Government Licence v3.0. Pages that show ONS figures carry the attribution the licence requires.
- Origins, native-script spellings, variants and well-known bearers: Wikidata, which is published under the CC0 public-domain dedication.
- Meanings are checked against these sources, never copied from them:
- for names from English and other European traditions, the etymology facts recorded in Wiktionary and Charlotte M. Yonge’s History of Christian Names (1884, public domain);
- for Sanskrit and other Indian names, the 1899 print edition of Monier Monier-Williams’ Sanskrit-English Dictionary, consulted through public-domain scans.
What “checked” means
A meaning counts as verified when it matches a meaning or root given in at least one verification source. If no source agrees, the name is not published. We do not fill the gap with a guess.
What a page needs before it is published
- A name page needs at least five facts from these categories: meaning, etymology or root, origin, script forms, pronunciation, variants, popularity data and verified famous bearers. Computed values, such as numerology numbers and naming letters, do not count toward the five.
- A list page needs at least 12 names that meet that bar.
Pages that fall short are not built, so you will not find empty or near-empty pages here.
Audits
Before each data release, a separate review pass, run independently of the drafting and with web verification, checks a random sample of the release: 5% of its records, and never fewer than 50. The release is published only if at least 95% of the sample is accurate. Otherwise it is held back and fixed.
Naming letters
Our nakshatra and rashi letter charts follow the North-Indian avakahada chakra as printed in Hindi panchangs. It is a traditional convention rather than a calculation, and published tables differ in a few cells, so we show the known variants instead of hiding them. Tamil and Telugu conventions are not covered yet.
What we don’t do
- We don’t copy names, meanings or lists from other baby-name websites or databases.
- We don’t list famous bearers of a name unless we can verify them.
- We don’t publish a name whose meaning we could not check.
