Mangal dosha calculator (Manglik check) with Lagna
Enter the date, time and place of birth to see your Lagna (ascendant), Moon sign and the sign of Mars, and which house Mars falls in counted from the Lagna, the Moon and Venus. The traditional rule for Mangal dosha lists the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th and 12th houses. This page shows the placement and the rule as facts, not a prediction.
How the check works
- Work out the Lagna (rising sign) from the time and the latitude and longitude of the place of birth.
- Find the signs of the Moon and of Mars at that moment, in the sidereal zodiac. (The Moon sign alone is on the rashi calculator.)
- Count from the Lagna’s sign to the sign of Mars, the Lagna’s own sign being the 1st house. Repeat from the Moon sign and from Venus.
- If a count gives 1, 2, 4, 7, 8 or 12, the traditional rule calls the chart Manglik for that count.
For example, for Delhi at midnight IST on 15 August 1947 the Lagna was Vrishabh (Taurus), the Moon in Kark and Mars in Mithun. Mars is in the 2nd house from the Lagna, the 12th from the Moon and the 12th from Venus (Kark).
Where Mars has to be, sign by sign
Read the row for the Lagna sign (or the Moon sign, for the count from the Moon). The rule applies when Mars is in one of the six signs listed. The 2nd-house column is the one some traditions leave out.
| Lagna or Moon sign | 1st | 2nd | 4th | 7th | 8th | 12th |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mesh (Aries) | Mesh | Vrishabh | Kark | Tula | Vrishchik | Meen |

The Lagna
The Lagna is the sign that was rising on the eastern horizon at birth. It sets the 1st house of the birth chart, so it is the starting point for every house count, not only this one. Because the Earth turns once a day, the Lagna runs through all twelve signs in about 24 hours; a birth time accurate to a few minutes and the right place both matter. When the Lagna changes sign within ten minutes of the time entered, the calculator says so and shows the count for the other sign as well. For the Lagna on its own, with its degree, nakshatra and pada and the times that sign was rising, use the Lagna calculator.

Frequently asked questions
What is Mangal dosha?
Mangal dosha (also called Manglik, Kuja dosha or Chevvai dosham) is a condition in Vedic astrology about where Mars (Mangal) sits in the birth chart. By the common rule, a chart has it when Mars is in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house. Families who follow the tradition usually look at it when matching horoscopes for marriage.
How is Mangal dosha calculated from the date of birth?
The date, time and place of birth give the Lagna (the sign rising in the east), the Moon's sign and the sign of Mars. Count from the Lagna to Mars, taking the Lagna's sign as the 1st house; if the count lands on 1, 2, 4, 7, 8 or 12, the rule applies. The same count is repeated from the Moon sign, and in some South Indian practice from Venus. The calculator above does all three counts.
Which houses cause Mangal dosha?
The houses most often listed are the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th and 12th from the Lagna. Some traditions leave out the 2nd house and use only 1, 4, 7, 8 and 12. For that shorter list, ignore the 2nd-house column of the table on this page; in the calculator, a count that gives the 2nd house then does not apply.
Should Mangal dosha be checked from the Lagna or the Moon?
Both are common. Many astrologers count from the Lagna and from the Moon sign, and some add Venus. A chart can count as Manglik from one and not from another, which is why the calculator lists each count separately rather than giving a single verdict.
What is my Lagna, and how is it calculated?
The Lagna, or ascendant, is the sign of the zodiac that was rising on the eastern horizon at the moment of birth. It depends on the exact time and on the latitude and longitude of the birthplace: the sidereal time at the place fixes which point of the zodiac is rising. The Lagna moves through all twelve signs in a day, about one sign every two hours on average, so a few minutes can change it. This page works it out with the Lahiri ayanamsa, the usual choice in India.
Why does the time of birth matter so much?
In India the Lagna changes sign about every two hours on average, faster for some signs than others (and the spread is much wider far from the equator), so a birth time out by ten minutes can move it into the next sign and shift every house count from it. The Moon changes sign every two to three days and Mars about every one and a half months, so those counts depend much less on the minute. The calculator warns when a sign change is close to the time entered.
Does this use whole-sign houses or bhava houses?
Whole-sign houses, the way houses are counted in the usual rashi (D1) chart: the whole sign of the Lagna is the 1st house, the next sign the 2nd, and so on. Some astrologers use bhava (house-cusp) charts instead, in which Mars near the edge of a sign can fall in a different house, so their result may differ for such charts.
Are exceptions to Mangal dosha taken into account?
No. Traditional texts and family practices describe situations in which the dosha is considered cancelled or reduced, for example when both partners have it, but the lists differ from one source to another. This page shows the plain placement and the basic rule only, and leaves the rest to the people and the astrologer involved.
Is Mangal dosha bad for marriage?
There is no evidence that the position of Mars affects a marriage. Mangal dosha is a tradition that many families consider in matching, and people weigh it very differently. This page reports astronomical positions and the traditional count, makes no predictions and suggests no remedies.
Are my birth details saved?
No. The calculation runs in your browser, and the birth details are not stored or sent anywhere. They appear in the page address only if you open or copy the share link.
