The Sun and the Moon rule one rashi each; the other five planets rule two:

The English names are the Western signs with the same figure, but rashis are counted in the sidereal zodiac and the naming rashi is the Moon's, so a baby's rashi is usually not its Western Sun sign.
Why does a rashi have nine letters?
A rashi spans 30°, which holds exactly nine nakshatra padas of 3°20′. Each pada carries one starting syllable, so each rashi owns nine name letters, and the 12 rashis share all 108.
What is a rashi name?
In the Hindu naming tradition, a rashi name is a name that begins with one of the nine syllables belonging to the baby's Moon sign (rashi). Each of the twelve rashis owns nine syllables, taken from the nine nakshatra padas that fall inside it.
How do I find my baby's rashi?

Are rashi names the same as zodiac sign names?
No. Rashis are signs of the sidereal zodiac, measured from the fixed stars, and the naming rashi is the Moon's. Western horoscope signs use the tropical zodiac and the Sun, so the two usually differ.
