Nine nakshatras cross from one rashi into the next, so their padas are split between two rashis; the 108-pada letters chart shows the rashi of every single pada. Shravana and Uttara Bhadrapada have regional variants, listed on their own pages.

Nakshatras by ruling planet

The nine planets of the Vimshottari dasha rule the nakshatras in a fixed cycle, each taking three that sit nine places apart (the dasha calculator turns a birth star into dasha dates):

Frequently asked questions

How many nakshatras are there?

There are 27 nakshatras in the system used for naming, each covering 13°20′ of the sidereal zodiac and divided into four padas of 3°20′, so 108 padas in all. Older lists add a 28th, Abhijit, which naming tables usually leave out.

What are the names of the 27 nakshatras in order?

In order from 0° of Mesh: Ashwini, Bharani, Krittika, Rohini, Mrigashira, Ardra, Punarvasu, Pushya, Ashlesha, Magha, Purva Phalguni, Uttara Phalguni, Hasta, Chitra, Swati, Vishakha, Anuradha, Jyeshtha, Mula, Purva Ashadha, Uttara Ashadha, Shravana, Dhanishta, Shatabhisha, Purva Bhadrapada, Uttara Bhadrapada and Revati.

What are nakshatra letters?

Each pada of a nakshatra carries one starting syllable, so every nakshatra has four name letters. A baby born with the Moon in that pada is traditionally given a name beginning with that syllable; the table on this page lists all 108.

What is a nakshatra name?

In the Hindu naming tradition, a nakshatra name begins with the syllable belonging to the baby's birth star (the Moon's nakshatra) and pada. Each of the 27 nakshatras has four padas, and each pada has one syllable.

How do I find my baby's nakshatra?

The nakshatra is the lunar mansion the Moon was in at birth, so it needs the date, time and place of birth. If you only know a name, the rashi by name tool shows which pada syllable its first sound belongs to.

Is the nakshatra the same as the rashi?

No. A rashi is a 30° sign and a nakshatra a 13°20′ star, so each rashi holds two and a quarter nakshatras, and a nakshatra can cross from one rashi into the next.
