Rashi by name

Type a name, in English letters or Devanagari, to find its rashi and nakshatra pada from the first syllable. The answer comes from the same reviewed table of 108 syllables as our letter charts, and the tool says when a name can be read two ways.

How rashi by name works

In the Hindu naming tradition every one of the 27 nakshatras has four padas, and each of the 108 padas has a starting syllable. A rashi is made of nine padas, so the syllables also sort into the 12 rashis. To find the rashi of a name, take its first sound, find the syllable in the table and read off the pada and rashi it sits in.

This is the name rashi. It is what a family uses when the birth details are not known, or when matching names. The birth rashi is the sign the Moon was in at birth. It comes from the birth chart (or from rashi by date of birth), and for a baby named by the nakshatra syllable the two agree.

Examples

Each line below is computed by the tool above from the first syllable of the name:

Rashi by first letter

If you only know the first letter, this table lists every syllable that starts with it and the rashi each one falls in. Letters that are missing (F, Q, W, X and Z) have no syllable of their own.

Nakshatra by name

The same lookup gives the nakshatra (see nakshatra by name for the ruling planet too): each syllable belongs to one pada of one nakshatra, shown in the result table. A name that begins with Chu, for example, points to Ashwini pada 1. The name alone cannot prove the baby’s birth star, because a name is a choice. The birth nakshatra comes from the date, time and place of birth.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find my rashi by name?

Type your first name in the box. The tool takes its first sound, finds that syllable in the traditional table of 108 nakshatra padas and shows the rashi (and the nakshatra and pada) the syllable belongs to. This is your name rashi, which families use when the birth date and time are not known.

Is the rashi by name the same as my birth rashi?

Not necessarily. Your birth rashi (janma rashi) is the sign the Moon was in when you were born, and it needs the date, time and place of birth. A name given by the nakshatra syllable usually matches it, but a name chosen for other reasons, or spelled differently, can fall in another rashi.

Why does my name give two different rashis?

Some English syllables stand for two different sounds in the table. Ta is ट in Singh but त in Tula, and Da is ड in Kark but द in Kumbh. When that happens the tool lists both and the Devanagari spelling of the name decides. Type the name in Devanagari to settle it.

Why does my name not start with a syllable in the table?

The table has 108 syllables, one per pada, so a letter such as F, W or Z has none of its own, B appears only as Bh, and conjuncts such as Kri or Shri are not listed. The tool then goes by the first consonant, or by the nearest sound (B as Bh), and says so. Treat those results as approximate.

Does this tool store or send my name?

No. The lookup runs in your browser and nothing you type is stored or sent anywhere.
