Nadi dosha calculator
Check two birth nakshatras for Nadi dosha. Choose each person’s nakshatra, or find it from the date of birth or the first syllable of the name; the calculator gives each nadi (Adi, Madhya or Antya) and whether the pair has Nadi dosha by the traditional rule of horoscope matching.
What the three nadis are
In horoscope matching the 27 nakshatras are divided into three nadis: Adi (the first), Madhya (the middle) and Antya (the last). The assignment follows a fixed pattern. Counting from Ashwini, the nadis run Adi, Madhya, Antya, then back again Antya, Madhya, Adi, and the six-star pattern repeats four and a half times around the zodiac, so each nadi holds exactly nine nakshatras.

The rule
Nadi is the eighth of the eight kootas of Ashtakoota milan and carries 8 of the 36 points, more than any other. It compares only the nadis of the two birth nakshatras:
- Different nadis: the Nadi koota scores 8 of 8, and there is no Nadi dosha.
- The same nadi: the Nadi koota scores 0, and the pair is said to have Nadi dosha.
For example, Rohini and Shravana are both Antya nadi, so that pair has Nadi dosha by the rule and scores 0 for Nadi. Rohini (Antya) and Hasta (Adi) are in different nadis, so that pair has no Nadi dosha and scores the full 8.
Because the nadi depends on the nakshatra alone, the rashi, the pada and the rest of the chart do not change it. Two people with the same birth nakshatra always share a nadi.
How the calculator finds each nakshatra
- Birth nakshatra. If the family horoscope or a temple record names the janma nakshatra, choose it directly. This is the most reliable input.
- Date of birth. The date, time and UTC offset fix the Moon’s sidereal position (Lahiri ayanamsa), worked out in your browser, and every 13°20′ of it is one nakshatra. The Moon changes nakshatra about once a day, so without a time the tool uses the Moon at noon, names every star the Moon passes through that day with its nadi, and says when one of them would change the answer. The same calculation powers the nakshatra calculator by date of birth.
- Name. The first syllable of the name is looked up in the traditional table of naming syllables, which gives a nakshatra and pada. This works only when the name was chosen from the birth star, so it is an approximation; when a syllable fits more than one nakshatra, the tool lets you choose.
You can mix the inputs, for example one person by date of birth and the other by nakshatra. When either input leaves room for a second nakshatra whose nadi would change the answer, the result says so.
About exceptions
Texts and family traditions describe situations in which a same-nadi pair is read differently, and they do not agree on the list. This calculator states the basic rule only. It does not apply any exception, does not mark a dosha as cancelled and does not predict anything about a marriage. Those questions belong to an astrologer reading the two complete birth charts.

Frequently asked questions
What is Nadi dosha?
Nadi dosha is the name for a pair whose birth nakshatras belong to the same nadi. Every one of the 27 nakshatras is assigned to one of three nadis, Adi, Madhya or Antya. In Ashtakoota (guna milan) horoscope matching the Nadi koota gives 8 points when the two nadis differ and 0 when they are the same, and the same-nadi case is called Nadi dosha.
How do I check Nadi dosha?
Find each person's janma nakshatra, the nakshatra of the Moon at birth, then look up its nadi in the table on this page. If both are in the same nadi, the pair has Nadi dosha by the traditional rule. The calculator above does this from the nakshatra, the date of birth or the first syllable of the name.
Which nakshatras are Adi, Madhya and Antya nadi?
Counting from Ashwini, the nadis run Adi, Madhya, Antya, Antya, Madhya, Adi and then repeat, so each nadi has nine nakshatras. Adi: Ashwini, Ardra, Punarvasu, Uttara Phalguni, Hasta, Jyeshtha, Mula, Shatabhisha, Purva Bhadrapada. Madhya: Bharani, Mrigashira, Pushya, Purva Phalguni, Chitra, Anuradha, Purva Ashadha, Dhanishta, Uttara Bhadrapada. Antya: Krittika, Rohini, Ashlesha, Magha, Swati, Vishakha, Uttara Ashadha, Shravana, Revati.
Is there Nadi dosha if both have the same nakshatra?
Two people born in the same nakshatra always share its nadi, so by the basic rule the pair has Nadi dosha. Traditions discuss such pairs further, and they do not all read them the same way; this tool states the basic rule only.
Can Nadi dosha be cancelled?
Different traditions describe conditions under which a same-nadi pair is read differently, and the lists do not agree. This calculator does not apply any of them and never marks a dosha as cancelled. An astrologer weighs those conditions with the two full birth charts.
Can I check Nadi dosha by name?
Yes, as an approximation. The first syllable of a name points to a nakshatra and pada in the traditional syllable table, which is right only when the name was chosen from the birth star. When the date and time of birth are known, the date of birth input is the better choice.
How many points does Nadi carry in guna milan?
8 of 36, the most of any of the eight kootas. That is why a same-nadi pair loses a large share of the total, and why families look at Nadi on its own as well as in the score.
