Rajju dosha calculator
Check two birth nakshatras for Rajju and Vedha porutham. Choose each person’s nakshatra, or find it from the date of birth or the first syllable of the name; the calculator gives each rajju (Pada, Kati, Nabhi, Kantha or Shiro), whether both fall in the same rajju, and whether the two stars form a vedha pair.
What the five rajjus are
South Indian marriage matching compares two horoscopes through ten poruthams (agreements). In Rajju porutham the 27 nakshatras are divided into five rajjus, each named after a part of the body. Counting from Ashwini, the rajjus run Pada, Kati, Nabhi, Kantha, Shiro and back down Kantha, Nabhi, Kati, Pada; the nine-star pattern repeats three times, so Shiro holds three nakshatras and each of the other rajjus six.
- Pada rajju (feet): Ashwini, Ashlesha, Magha, Jyeshtha, Mula, Revati.
- Kati rajju (waist), also called Ooru (thigh): Bharani, Pushya, Purva Phalguni, Anuradha, Purva Ashadha, Uttara Bhadrapada.
- Nabhi rajju (navel), also called Udara (belly): Krittika, Punarvasu, Uttara Phalguni, Vishakha, Uttara Ashadha, Purva Bhadrapada.
- Kantha rajju (neck): Rohini, Ardra, Hasta, Swati, Shravana, Shatabhisha.
- Shiro rajju (head): Mrigashira, Chitra, Dhanishta.

The rajju rule
- Different rajjus: the Rajju porutham agrees, and there is no rajju dosha.
- The same rajju: the Rajju porutham does not agree, and the pair is said to have rajju dosha.
For example, Ashwini and Magha are both in Pada rajju, so that pair has rajju dosha by the rule. Ashwini (Pada) and Bharani (Kati) are in different rajjus, so that pair has none. The rajju depends on the nakshatra alone; the rashi and the pada do not change it.
Vedha pairs
Vedha porutham names pairs of nakshatras that are said to obstruct each other. A couple whose two birth stars form a vedha pair does not agree in Vedha porutham. The twelve pairs outside Shiro rajju appear in every list checked, and every list that gives the Shiro stars a vedha star pairs Mrigashira with Dhanishta:
- Ashwini and Jyeshtha
- Bharani and Anuradha
- Krittika and Vishakha
- Rohini and Swati
- Mrigashira and Dhanishta
- Ardra and Shravana
- Punarvasu and Uttara Ashadha
- Pushya and Purva Ashadha
- Ashlesha and Mula
- Magha and Revati
- Purva Phalguni and Uttara Bhadrapada
- Uttara Phalguni and Purva Bhadrapada
- Hasta and Shatabhisha
The lists differ on Chitra: some make Mrigashira–Chitra and Chitra–Dhanishta vedha pairs too (so that Mrigashira, Chitra and Dhanishta are all vedha to one another), while others give Chitra no vedha star, and some shorter lists give none of the three Shiro stars one. The calculator reports those two pairs as “the lists differ”. In this table every vedha pair is also a same-rajju pair; for example Ashwini and Jyeshtha are both Pada rajju.
How the calculator finds each nakshatra
- Birth nakshatra. If the family horoscope or a temple record names the janma nakshatra, choose it directly. This is the most reliable input.
- Date of birth. The date, time and UTC offset of the birthplace fix the Moon’s sidereal position (Lahiri ayanamsa), worked out in your browser, and every 13°20′ of it is one nakshatra. Without a time the tool uses the Moon at noon, names every star the Moon passes through that day, and says when one of them would change the answer. The same calculation powers the nakshatra calculator by date of birth.
- Name. The first syllable of the name is looked up in the traditional table of naming syllables (as in the nakshatra by name tool). This gives the name nakshatra, which matches the birth star only when the name was chosen from it, so it is an approximation.
About exceptions
Texts and family traditions describe further distinctions within a rajju and situations in which a same-rajju or vedha pair is read differently, and they do not agree on them. This calculator states the basic rules only. It does not apply any exception, does not mark a dosha as cancelled and does not predict anything about a marriage. Those questions belong to an astrologer reading the two complete birth charts.

Frequently asked questions
What is rajju dosha?
Rajju is one of the ten poruthams (agreements) of South Indian marriage matching. Each of the 27 nakshatras belongs to one of five rajjus, named after parts of the body: Pada (feet), Kati (waist), Nabhi (navel), Kantha (neck) and Shiro (head). When the birth nakshatras of the two people are in the same rajju, the Rajju porutham does not agree, and this is called rajju dosha.
How do I check rajju porutham?
Find each person's janma nakshatra, the nakshatra of the Moon at birth, and look up its rajju in the table on this page. Different rajjus agree; the same rajju is rajju dosha by the traditional rule. The calculator above does this from the nakshatra, the date of birth or the first syllable of the name.
Which nakshatras are in each rajju?
Pada rajju: Ashwini, Ashlesha, Magha, Jyeshtha, Mula, Revati. Kati rajju: Bharani, Pushya, Purva Phalguni, Anuradha, Purva Ashadha, Uttara Bhadrapada. Nabhi rajju: Krittika, Punarvasu, Uttara Phalguni, Vishakha, Uttara Ashadha, Purva Bhadrapada. Kantha rajju: Rohini, Ardra, Hasta, Swati, Shravana, Shatabhisha. Shiro rajju: Mrigashira, Chitra, Dhanishta.
What is vedha dosha in marriage matching?
Vedha is another of the ten poruthams. Certain pairs of nakshatras are said to obstruct (vedha) each other, and a couple whose two birth stars form such a pair does not agree in Vedha porutham. These twelve pairs appear in every published list checked: Ashwini and Jyeshtha; Bharani and Anuradha; Krittika and Vishakha; Rohini and Swati; Ardra and Shravana; Punarvasu and Uttara Ashadha; Pushya and Purva Ashadha; Ashlesha and Mula; Magha and Revati; Purva Phalguni and Uttara Bhadrapada; Uttara Phalguni and Purva Bhadrapada; Hasta and Shatabhisha. Lists that give the three Shiro rajju stars a vedha star pair Mrigashira with Dhanishta.
Does Chitra have a vedha nakshatra?
The published lists disagree. Some make Mrigashira, Chitra and Dhanishta all vedha to one another; others pair only Mrigashira with Dhanishta and give Chitra no vedha star; and some shorter lists give none of the three a vedha star. This calculator says the lists differ for Chitra with Mrigashira or Dhanishta and does not choose. All three stars are in Shiro rajju, so those pairs are a same-rajju pair either way.
Is there rajju dosha if both have the same nakshatra?
Two people born in the same nakshatra are always in the same rajju, so by the basic rule the pair has rajju dosha. Traditions discuss same-star pairs further, and they do not all read them the same way; this tool states the basic rule only. A star is never vedha with itself.
Can rajju dosha be cancelled?
Different traditions describe further distinctions and conditions under which a same-rajju pair is read differently, and the accounts do not agree. This calculator does not apply any of them and never marks a dosha as cancelled. An astrologer weighs those with the two full birth charts.
How is rajju different from Nadi dosha?
Both compare only the two birth nakshatras, with different groupings. Nadi sorts the 27 stars into three nadis and belongs to the 36-point Ashtakoota (guna milan) of North India. Rajju sorts them into five rajjus and belongs to the ten-porutham matching used in South India. A pair can have one and not the other.
