Nakshatra by name
Type a name, in English letters or Devanagari, to find its nakshatra, pada and ruling planet from the first syllable. The answer comes from the reviewed table of 108 naming syllables, and the tool says when a name can be read two ways.
How nakshatra by name works
The 27 nakshatras are the lunar mansions of Vedic astrology, each divided into four padas. Each of the 108 padas has a starting syllable, and in the namkaran tradition a baby’s name begins with the syllable of the pada the Moon was in. To find the nakshatra of a name, take its first sound, find the syllable in the table and read off the nakshatra and pada.
The ruling planet follows the fixed Vimshottari order, which repeats every nine nakshatras: Ashwini, Magha and Mula are ruled by Ketu, Bharani, Purva Phalguni and Purva Ashadha by Venus, and so on down the list below.
Examples
Each line is computed by the tool above from the first syllable of the name:
- Aarav starts with A: Krittika pada 1, ruled by Sun.
- Ishaan starts with I: Krittika pada 2, ruled by Sun.
- Kavya starts with Ka: Mrigashira pada 3, ruled by Mars.
- Tara starts with Ta: Purva Phalguni pada 2 or Swati pada 4, ruled by Venus and Rahu.
- Ravi starts with Ra: Chitra pada 3, ruled by Mars.
- Pranav starts with Pa, Pi, Pu, Pe and Po: Uttara Phalguni pada 3 or Uttara Phalguni pada 4 or Hasta pada 1 or Chitra pada 1 or Chitra pada 2, ruled by Sun, Moon and Mars.

Frequently asked questions
How do I find my nakshatra by name?
Type your first name in the box. The tool takes its first sound, finds that syllable among the 108 traditional naming syllables and shows the nakshatra and pada it belongs to, with the ruling planet. This is the name nakshatra, used when the birth details are not known.
Is the nakshatra by name my birth star?
Only if the name was chosen from your birth star's syllable. Your birth nakshatra (janma nakshatra) is the star the Moon was in at birth and needs the date, time and place of birth. A name chosen for another reason can fall in a different nakshatra.
Why does one syllable give two nakshatras?
Some English syllables stand for two different sounds in the table, such as Ta (ट or त) and Da (ड or द). The tool then lists both and the Devanagari spelling of the name decides which one applies.
What does the pada number mean?
Each nakshatra spans 13°20′ of the zodiac and is cut into four padas of 3°20′. Every pada has its own starting syllable, which is why there are 108 syllables in all.
Does this tool store or send my name?
No. The lookup runs in your browser and nothing you type is stored or sent anywhere.
