Personal Year Calculator
Find your personal year number for any year from 1900 to 2100: choose your birthday and a year to see the number with every step of the working, where the year sits in the 9-year cycle, the personal month for each month and, if you like, the personal day for a date. It uses only the day and month of birth. Numerology is a tradition, shared here for interest, and the numbers predict nothing.
What is a personal year?
In numerology, a personal year is one step in a cycle of nine years that repeats through life. Its number, from 1 to 9, comes from your birthday together with a calendar year, so everyone with the same birthday shares the same personal year, and it moves on by one each January. Writers on numerology give each step a broad theme, from beginnings in a 1 year to completion in a 9 year, and use it to describe the general tone of a year rather than particular events.
How to calculate a personal year number
- Write your birthday as day and month, and choose the calendar year: DD MM YYYY.
- Add all of those digits together.
- Add the digits of the total, and repeat until a single digit from 1 to 9 is left.
- If the total passes through 11 or 22 on the way, numerologists who keep master numbers write the result as 11/2 or 22/4. The year is still step 2 or 4 of the cycle.
Worked example: a 14 August birthday in 2027
The digits are 1 4 (day), 0 8 (month) and 2 0 2 7 (year): 1 + 4 + 0 + 8 + 2 + 0 + 2 + 7 = 24 → 2 + 4 = 6. So 2027 is a personal year 6, the theme tradition calls home and care. Because a year reduces to one more than the year before it (after 9 comes 1), 2028 is a personal year 7, and this cycle runs from 2022 (a 1 year) to 2030 (a 9 year).
For the same person, October 2027 is a personal month 7 (6 + 10 = 16 → 1 + 6 = 7), and 5 March 2027 is a personal day 5: March gives the personal month 6 + 3 = 9, then 9 + 5 = 14 → 1 + 4 = 5.
A master number example: a 9 September birthday in 2027 gives 0 + 9 + 0 + 9 + 2 + 0 + 2 + 7 = 29 → 2 + 9 = 11 → 1 + 1 = 2, written 11/2.
The 9-year cycle and its themes
These are the themes most often given to each personal year in numerology writing, in our own short words. They describe a mood or focus, not outcomes.
| Year | Keyword | Traditional theme |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Beginnings | starting something new, setting a direction and acting on your own initiative |
| 2 | Patience and partnership | cooperation, listening and letting plans grow at their own pace |
| 3 | Expression | creativity, conversation, friendships and sharing ideas |
| 4 | Foundations | steady work, routines, order and building something to last |
| 5 | Change | movement, variety, travel and adapting to the unexpected |
| 6 | Home and care | family, responsibility and looking after others and yourself |
| 7 | Reflection | study, rest, quiet thinking and looking inward |
| 8 | Effort and direction | ambition, organisation and taking charge of long-term goals |
| 9 | Completion | finishing what was started, letting go and clearing space for the next cycle |
After a 9 year the cycle starts again at 1. Writers who keep master numbers treat an 11/2 year as a 2 year with extra weight on intuition, and a 22/4 year as a 4 year with extra weight on large practical projects.
Personal year, life path and bhagyank
The personal year is often confused with the numbers that come from the full date of birth. The destiny number (bhagyank in Indian numerology, close to the Western life path number) adds every digit of the date including the birth year, and the birth number (mulank) comes from the day alone; both stay the same for life. Work them out with the bhagyank and mulank calculator. The personal year replaces the birth year with the calendar year, which is why it changes every year. Frequently asked questions
What is a personal year number?
In numerology, a personal year number is a single digit from 1 to 9 that comes from your birthday and a calendar year. It marks where that year falls in a repeating 9-year cycle. Unlike a life path or destiny number, which never changes, the personal year moves on by one every year, so it is used to describe the general theme of a particular year in numerology tradition.
How do I calculate my personal year number?
Add the digits of your birth day, your birth month and the calendar year you are interested in, then keep adding the digits of the total until one digit is left. For a 14 August birthday in 2027: 1 + 4 + 0 + 8 + 2 + 0 + 2 + 7 = 24 → 2 + 4 = 6. Your birth year is not used.
Does this calculator keep master numbers 11 and 22?
It shows them without breaking the cycle. When the total passes through 11 or 22, the result is written as 11/2 or 22/4, the notation used by numerologists who keep master numbers, and the year still counts as number 2 or 4 of the 9-year cycle. For example, a 9 September birthday in 2027 gives 0 + 9 + 0 + 9 + 2 + 0 + 2 + 7 = 29 → 2 + 9 = 11 → 1 + 1 = 2, written 11/2. Some writers add the day, month and year after reducing each one first; that gives the same final digit but can show a master number in a different year.
When does a personal year start, on 1 January or on my birthday?
Most numerology writers use the calendar year, so a personal year runs from 1 January to 31 December, and that is what this calculator does. A smaller group counts it from one birthday to the next. If you follow that method, use the previous calendar year for the months before your birthday.
What is the difference between a personal year and a life path number?
The life path number (called bhagyank, or destiny number, in Indian numerology) adds every digit of the full date of birth, including the birth year, so it stays the same for life. The personal year swaps the birth year for the calendar year, so it changes every year. Someone born on 14 August 1992 has a destiny number of 7, and a personal year of 6 in 2027 and 7 in 2028.
What are personal months and personal days?
They narrow the same idea down. A personal month adds the calendar month number to the personal year and reduces it; a personal day adds the day of the month to the personal month. In a personal year 6, October is 6 + 10 = 16 → 1 + 6 = 7. Both are always single digits from 1 to 9.
Can a personal year number predict what will happen?
No. Personal year themes are a numerology tradition, shared here for interest. There is no evidence that a number based on the calendar shapes events, health or money, and nothing on this page should be used for important decisions.
Is what I enter saved anywhere?
No. The numbers are worked out in your browser, and the site does not store your birthday or send it to analytics. If you open or copy the share link, the birthday and year are part of that link's address, so anyone you send it to will see them.
