Bhagyank and mulank calculator: destiny and birth number
This bhagyank calculator, which is also a moolank (mulank) calculator, takes a date of birth and shows the destiny number (bhagyank) and birth number (mulank), with every step of the addition shown and the planet Indian numerology links with each number. Some people call this a lucky number by date of birth; it is a traditional pastime, shared here for interest, and a number does not predict anything about a child.
How to calculate your birth and destiny numbers
- Birth number (mulank, also spelled moolank): take the day of the month and add its digits until one digit is left. Only the day counts.
- Destiny number (bhagyank): write the date as day, month and year (DD MM YYYY), add every digit, then add the digits of the total until one digit is left.
For example, a baby born on 14 August 2021 has birth number 5 (14 → 1 + 4 = 5) and destiny number 9 (1 + 4 + 0 + 8 + 2 + 0 + 2 + 1 = 18 → 1 + 8 = 9). A leap-day birthday, 29 February 2024, gives birth number 2 (29 → 2 + 9 = 11 → 1 + 1 = 2) and destiny number 3 (2 + 9 + 0 + 2 + 2 + 0 + 2 + 4 = 21 → 2 + 1 = 3).
Indian practice always reduces to one digit. Some Western numerologists stop at 11 or 22 and call them master numbers; the calculator notes when a total passes through one.
Numbers 1 to 9 and their ruling planets
Indian numerology links each number with one of the nine grahas. The table also shows which days of the month give each birth number. These are traditional associations, not character readings.
| Number | Ruling planet | Born on day | More |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | the Sun (Surya) | 1, 10, 19 or 28 | Number 1 |
| 2 | the Moon (Chandra) | 2, 11, 20 or 29 | Number 2 |
| 3 | Jupiter (Guru) | 3, 12, 21 or 30 | Number 3 |
| 4 | Rahu | 4, 13, 22 or 31 | Number 4 |
| 5 | Mercury (Budh) | 5, 14 or 23 | Number 5 |
| 6 | Venus (Shukra) | 6, 15 or 24 | Number 6 |
| 7 | Ketu | 7, 16 or 25 | Number 7 |
| 8 | Saturn (Shani) | 8, 17 or 26 | Number 8 |
| 9 | Mars (Mangal) | 9, 18 or 27 | Number 9 |
Western writers link 4 with Uranus and 7 with Neptune instead of Rahu and Ketu. Many numerologists use the same planet list for the destiny number.
Birth numbers and name numbers
The mulank and bhagyank come from the date of birth; the name number (namank) comes from the letters of a name, so a namank calculator is a different tool. Some families compare them when choosing a name. Work out a name’s number in the name numerology calculator, read the namank guide for how the three numbers differ, or see baby name numerology for using numbers sensibly on a shortlist. For the number on a phone, try the mobile number numerology calculator. To place every digit of the date in the 4-9-2 magic square, use the Lo Shu grid calculator. For the number that changes every year, see the personal year calculator. To see which name numbers are traditionally paired with a birth date, and names that add up to them, use baby name by date of birth. For the Feng Shui number from a birth year, with its lucky directions, try the kua number calculator.
Frequently asked questions
How do I use a bhagyank calculator?
Enter the full date of birth above. The bhagyank is every digit of the day, month and year added, then reduced to one digit; the calculator shows each step. The same result is often called the destiny number, and it is worked out from the date alone, so the time and place of birth do not matter.
Is a destiny number calculator the same as a bhagyank calculator?
In Indian numerology, yes: the destiny number and the bhagyank are the same digit, from the full date of birth. Be aware that in Pythagorean writing a "destiny number" (or expression number) is sometimes worked out from a name instead, which is a different number; for the name version use the name number calculator.
What is a moolank calculator?
Moolank, also written mulank, is the birth number: the day of the month reduced to one digit. A moolank calculator needs only the day, so someone born on the 14th has moolank 5. This page shows it next to the bhagyank.
What is a namank calculator, and how is namank different?
Namank is the number of a name rather than a date. It is found by adding letter values from a chart, which the name numerology calculator linked in the section below does for you; the namank guide explains how it differs from the mulank and bhagyank on this page.
What is my lucky number by date of birth?
When people ask for a lucky number from a date of birth, they often mean the birth number (mulank or moolank), the day of the month reduced to one digit. Some also look at the destiny number (bhagyank) from the full date instead. Numerology is a tradition with no scientific evidence behind it, and no number is luckier than another; the calculator shows both numbers and the planet each is traditionally linked with.
How do I calculate my mulank (birth number)?
Take the day of the month you were born on and add its digits until one digit is left. Days 1 to 9 are already single digits; 29 gives 29 → 2 + 9 = 11 → 1 + 1 = 2. The month and year are not used.
How do I calculate my bhagyank (destiny number)?
Write the full date as day, month and year and add every digit, then keep adding the digits of the total until one digit is left. For 14 August 2021: 1 + 4 + 0 + 8 + 2 + 0 + 2 + 1 = 18 → 1 + 8 = 9. Some numerologists reduce the day, month and year separately first; the final single digit is the same either way.
Which planet rules each number?
Indian numerology links the numbers with the nine grahas: 1 with the Sun (Surya), 2 with the Moon (Chandra), 3 with Jupiter (Guru), 4 with Rahu, 5 with Mercury (Budh), 6 with Venus (Shukra), 7 with Ketu, 8 with Saturn (Shani), 9 with Mars (Mangal). Western writers link 4 with Uranus and 7 with Neptune instead.
Does it use my time or place of birth?
No. Birth numbers use only the date. A birth-chart rashi or nakshatra is different: it depends on the exact time and place of birth and is worked out by an astrologer from the Moon's position.
Is the date I enter saved anywhere?
No. The calculation runs in your browser and the site does not store the date or send it to analytics. If you open or copy the share link, the date is part of that link's address, so anyone you send it to will see it.
