Telugu nakshatra calculator

Find a janma nakshatram from the date and time of birth. The answer uses the Telugu star name (Aswini, Kruttika, Mrigasira, Pubba, Sravanam and so on) beside the Sanskrit name, with the pada and the naming syllable.

Date, time and place of birth

The Moon moves about 13° a day, half a degree an hour, so the time matters: the rashi changes every two to three days and the nakshatra about once a day. Use the clock time on the birth record. For India choose UTC+05:30 (Indian Standard Time); for a birth abroad, choose the offset in force that day, including summer time.

What the calculator does

The local birth time is converted to universal time with the offset you choose, the Moon’s longitude is computed, and the Lahiri ayanamsa is subtracted to place it in the sidereal zodiac. The zodiac is cut into 27 equal stars of 13°20′ counted from the start of Mesha, and the one the Moon falls in is the janma nakshatram. Section 5, for instance, is Mrigasira in Telugu and Mrigashira in Sanskrit.

The ruling planet follows the Vimshottari order, which repeats through nine planets across the 27 stars; it is also the planet whose dasha a person is born into.

When a date covers two stars

The Moon spends about a day in each star, so one date often holds two. On 14 January 2025 (IST) it started in Punarvasu pada 3, moved into Punarvasu pada 4 at 04:20, moved into Pushyami (Pushya) pada 1 at 10:17, moved into Pushyami (Pushya) pada 2 at 16:17 and moved into Pushyami (Pushya) pada 3 at 22:18. If the time is not known, tick the box and the tool lists every star of the day with its change time.

The 27 nakshatrams in Telugu and Sanskrit

Read across a row to go from the Telugu name to the Sanskrit name and ruling planet. Some stars, such as Bharani, Rohini, Hasta and Revati, carry the same name in both languages.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find my janma nakshatram from my date of birth?

Enter the birth date, the time on the birth record and the UTC offset of the place of birth. The calculator works out where the Moon stood in the sidereal zodiac (Lahiri ayanamsa) and names the star in Telugu style, such as Mrigasira, Arudra or Pubba, with the Sanskrit name, the pada and the ruling planet beside it.

Is the janma nakshatram the same as the nakshatra in my jataka chart?

Yes, both are the star the Moon occupied at birth, so a correctly cast jataka chart and this calculator should agree. Differences come from a loosely recorded birth time, a Moon close to the end of a star, or a chart drawn with another method. The tool flags births within half a degree of a boundary so you know when to double-check.

Why do Telugu star names look different from the Sanskrit ones?

Telugu almanacs often shorten or respell the Sanskrit names: Pubba for Purva Phalguni, Uttara for Uttara Phalguni, Arudra for Ardra, Makha for Magha, Sravanam for Shravana. All of them label the same 27 equal divisions of the sky, so only the name on the row changes. The table on this page puts each Telugu name beside its Sanskrit name.

Which spelling of the Telugu star names should I use?

Telugu sounds have no single English spelling, so you may see Kruttika or Krittika, Visakha or Vishakha, Satabhisham or Shatabhisha. The page uses one common spelling per star and lists the Sanskrit name next to it, so a panchangam, school form or marriage biodata can always be matched to the right row.

How is the pada used for naming a child?

A pada is a quarter of a star, 3°20′ wide. Whichever pada the Moon was in at birth fixes the opening sound a family traditionally looks for in the child's name; the result prints that sound in English letters and in Devanagari.

Are the star names shown in Telugu script?

Not yet. Names appear in English letters, the form most certificates and online forms expect. Telugu script is held back until someone fluent in Telugu has proofread it, because one wrong letter in a star name does more harm than leaving it out.
