Numerology name correction: checking spellings and name numbers
Last updated
Some families look at the numerology number of a name and, if they want a different number, try another spelling. This guide explains how that works as a tradition: how the Chaldean and Pythagorean totals are calculated, how adding or dropping a single letter changes them, and how to compare spellings side by side with the spelling variant checker in the name number calculator.
What name correction means in numerology
In Indian numerology, a name is often checked with the Chaldean chart: each letter has a value, the values are added to a total, and the total is reduced to a single digit, the name number (namank). When a family wants that number to be a particular one, they sometimes try a different spelling, such as adding a letter or doubling a vowel. Numerologists call this name correction. People who are thinking about a name change look at it the same way: they compare the number of the new name or spelling with the old one.
Whatever you think of the practice, the calculation behind it is simple arithmetic, and it can be checked by anyone. That is what the rest of this guide covers.
How to compare spellings
- Write down every spelling you are considering, in English letters, exactly as it would be written on a document.
- Open the name number calculator and scroll to the spelling variant checker. Type one spelling per line.
- If you have a target number in mind, choose it. Spellings that end on that number in a system are marked, in words, so the result does not rely on colour.
- Read the reduction steps shown under each spelling (for example 11 becomes 1 + 1 = 2), so you can see where the number came from.
- Compare the Chaldean and Pythagorean results. A spelling can reach the target in one system and miss it in the other, and the master numbers 11, 22 and 33 exist only in the Pythagorean system.
Worked examples: one name, several spellings
Indian names written in English letters often have several common spellings. The table shows what the letters add up to in each system for a few of them. Every figure is calculated from the charts below.
| Spelling | Chaldean total | Chaldean number | Pythagorean total | Pythagorean number |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| AARAV | 11 | 2 | 16 | 7 |
| ARAV | 10 | 1 | 15 | 6 |
| AARAAV | 12 | 3 | 17 | 8 |
| KRISHNA | 19 | 1 | 35 | 8 |
| KRISNA | 14 | 5 | 27 | 9 |
| KRISHNAA | 20 | 2 | 36 | 9 |
| PRIYA | 13 | 4 | 33 | 33 |
| PRIA | 12 | 3 | 26 | 8 |
| PRIYAA | 14 | 5 | 34 | 7 |
| DIYA | 7 | 7 | 21 | 3 |
| DIA | 6 | 6 | 14 | 5 |
| DIYAA | 8 | 8 | 22 | 22 |
A one-letter difference can move the number a long way or leave it where it was, depending on the letter, and the two systems often disagree about the same pair of spellings. Neither result says which spelling is the better name.
What one more letter does to a Chaldean total
Adding a letter adds that letter’s value to the total, and dropping one subtracts it. The Chaldean chart values letters by sound from 1 to 8, with 9 left out.
So doubling an A adds 1 to the total, while adding an H adds 5. The new total is then reduced again by adding its digits. The full charts for both systems are below, and the Chaldean vs Pythagorean guide explains why they differ.

| Value | Letters |

Using the Chaldean numerology calculator
The Chaldean numerology calculator on this site works in your browser and shows the Chaldean and Pythagorean numbers together, with each letter value and each reduction step, so nothing is a black box. In the Cheiro tradition of Chaldean practice, totals from 10 to 52 are also called compound numbers, and the calculator points them out when a spelling lands on one. Traditions attach their own readings to compound numbers; we do not, because those readings differ widely between writers and cannot be checked.
What each number is traditionally linked with
If your target is a particular number, here is what the tradition links with it. These are themes writers commonly mention, not descriptions of a person.
| Number | Graha | Themes |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Sun (Surya) | beginnings, independence, initiative |
| 2 | Moon (Chandra) | partnership, cooperation, sensitivity |
| 3 | Jupiter (Guru) | expression, creativity, sociability |
| 4 | Rahu | structure, steadiness, hard work |
| 5 | Mercury (Budh) | change, curiosity, communication |
| 6 | Venus (Shukra) | care, home and family, harmony |
| 7 | Ketu | reflection, inquiry, the inner life |
| 8 | Saturn (Shani) | ambition, discipline, endurance |
| 9 | Mars (Mangal) | compassion, courage, completion |
Keeping it in proportion
- Be wary of anyone who says a name will bring misfortune unless you pay to “correct” it. The checker on this site is free, and the arithmetic is the same wherever you do it.
- Choose the name first, for its sound, meaning and family ties; check the number last.
- Decide in advance which system your family follows, and do not mix the two charts.
- Prefer a spelling people can read and write correctly. A spelling that is hard to pronounce will be corrected for the rest of a child’s life.
- Keep one spelling on every document. A legal change of name or spelling is a formal process that differs from place to place, so check the rules where you live before committing to one.
- If your family also follows the birth star, the nakshatra letters chart lists the starting syllables, and that is a separate tradition from numerology.

Frequently asked questions
What is numerology name correction?
It is the practice of adjusting how a name is spelled, for example by adding or dropping a letter, so that its Chaldean or Pythagorean number lands on a number the family prefers. It is a cultural practice with no scientific evidence behind it. This site only does the arithmetic and does not recommend any spelling.
Does changing the spelling of a name change a person's life?
There is no evidence that it does. A spelling change changes the letters you add up, and so the number you get, and nothing else. Treat it as a tradition some families enjoy, not as a way to change an outcome.
Which system is used for name correction, Chaldean or Pythagorean?
Many numerologists, including many in India, use the Chaldean chart, which values letters by sound from 1 to 8, while Pythagorean numbering follows alphabetical order from 1 to 9. The spelling checker shows both, so you can see where they agree and where they differ, and you can follow whichever system your family uses.
Which numbers can a name reach?
A Chaldean name number is always 1 to 9, because every total is reduced to one digit. A Pythagorean name number is 1 to 9, or one of the master numbers 11, 22 and 33, which are kept instead of reduced.
Can I change my name officially just to change its number?
A legal change of name or spelling is a formal process with its own rules, fees and paperwork that differ from place to place, and documents such as a passport, school records and bank accounts all need to match. Check the rules where you live, and weigh that effort against what is, for most people, a matter of tradition.
Is the name I type into the spelling checker saved?
No. The checker runs in your browser and the site does not store what you type or send it to analytics. If you open or copy the share link, the spellings are part of that link's address, so anyone you send it to will see them.
