Baby name numerology: find the number of a name
Last updated
Many families check the numerology number of a baby name before the naming ceremony. This guide explains how the number is worked out, how the Chaldean and Pythagorean systems differ, and how to use the number sensibly when you shortlist names. Try any name in the name numerology calculator.
How a baby name becomes a number
- Write the name in English letters, in the spelling that will go on the birth certificate.
- Give each letter a value from the Chaldean or Pythagorean chart.
- Add the values to get the total.
- Add the digits of the total until one digit is left. That is the name number (नामांक).
The full letter charts are in name numerology explained, and the differences between the two systems in Chaldean vs Pythagorean numerology.
Worked examples for popular baby names
| Name | Chaldean total | Chaldean number | Pythagorean total | Pythagorean number |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aarav | 11 | 2 | 16 | 7 |
| Vihaan | 19 | 1 | 28 | 1 |
| Reyansh | 22 | 4 | 36 | 9 |
| Ananya | 14 | 5 | 20 | 2 |
| Diya | 7 | 7 | 21 | 3 |
| Aadhya | 13 | 4 | 22 | 22 |
| Noah | 18 | 9 | 20 | 2 |
| Olivia | 19 | 1 | 32 | 5 |
| Liam | 9 | 9 | 17 | 8 |
| Emma | 14 | 5 | 14 | 5 |
Spelling matters: a name written with a different spelling can land on a different number. The Pythagorean system keeps the master numbers 11, 22 and 33 instead of reducing them further, which is why Aadhya shows 22; the Chaldean system always reduces to one digit.
What each number is traditionally linked with

| 4 | Rahu | structure, steadiness, hard work |
| 5 | Mercury (Budh) | change, curiosity, communication |
| 6 | Venus (Shukra) | care, home and family, harmony |
| 7 | Ketu | reflection, inquiry, the inner life |
| 8 | Saturn (Shani) | ambition, discipline, endurance |
| 9 | Mars (Mangal) | compassion, courage, completion |
Using the number when you choose a name
- Shortlist on sound, meaning and family fit first; check the number last.
- Decide in advance which system your family follows, so you do not mix two charts.
- Keep one spelling everywhere: school, documents and the passport.
- Use the birth-star letter if your family follows it: the rashi name finder and the nakshatra letters chart list the starting syllables.
- Remember the namank, moolank and bhagyank are different numbers; see the namank guide, and work out the birth numbers with the lucky number by date of birth calculator.
- Torn between spellings? Compare them side by side in the numerology name correction guide.
- To see which name numbers are traditionally paired with a baby’s birth date, try baby name by date of birth.
Frequently asked questions
How do I find the numerology number of a baby name?
Give each letter its value from a chart, add the values, then add the digits of the total until one digit is left. Indian practice often uses the Chaldean chart; Western sources use Pythagorean. The two can give different numbers for the same name.
What is the lucky number for a name?
Numerology traditions call the single-digit result of the letters the name number, and some writers treat it as a lucky number. It is a cultural tradition with no scientific evidence behind it, so treat it as a point of interest, not a rule.
Should I choose a baby name by its number?
Only if it matters to your family. Pick names you love first, then check the number as a tie-breaker. Changing a spelling to reach a number can make the name harder to read and spell for the rest of the child's life.
Does the baby's birth date matter as well?
Many families also look at the moolank (day of birth) and bhagyank (full date of birth). They are separate from the name number; see the namank guide for the difference.
