Namank: how to find a name number (नामांक)

Last updated

The namank (नामांक) is the number numerologists get from the letters of a name. This guide shows how to work it out by hand with the Chaldean chart used in Indian practice, how it differs from the moolank and bhagyank, and the graha traditionally linked with each number.

How to find the namank in four steps

  1. Write the name in English letters, using the spelling that will be used officially.
  2. Give each letter its value from the Chaldean chart below.
  3. Add the values to get the total.
  4. Add the digits of the total until one digit is left. That digit is the namank.
Chaldean letter values (no letter is given 9)
ValueLetters
1A I J Q Y
2B K R
3C G L S
4D M T
5E H N X
6U V W
7O Z
8F P

Example: Ananya adds up to 14 in the Chaldean chart, so its namank is 5. For any name, the name numerology calculator shows every step.

Namank, moolank and bhagyank

Work out the moolank and bhagyank for any date with the bhagyank and mulank calculator (also a destiny number calculator), or see the name numbers traditionally paired with them in baby name by date of birth.

Chaldean and Pythagorean charts can disagree; see Chaldean numerology chart and Pythagorean comparison. For choosing a name by the birth star instead, use the rashi name finder. Adding up a phone number instead? Use the mobile number numerology calculator. Choosing for a newborn? See baby name numerology.

Frequently asked questions

What is a namank?

Namank (नामांक) is the name number: the single digit you get by giving each letter of a name a value and reducing the total. Indian practice usually uses the Chaldean chart for it.

What is the difference between namank, moolank and bhagyank?

The namank comes from the letters of a name. The moolank (मूलांक) comes from the day of the month of birth, and the bhagyank (भाग्यांक) from the full date of birth. They are separate numbers.

Does the spelling of a name change the namank?

Yes. The number is worked out from English letters, so Aarav and Arav can give different numbers. Use the spelling that will be written on documents.
